Quick Summary
The short version
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh still share the professional tax structure they had before the 2014 split: nothing up to ₹15,000 a month, ₹150 up to ₹20,000 and ₹200 above that. Employers pay by the 10th of the next month. The two states run separate portals and…

Registration and enrolment
Registration (RC): employers with staff earning above ₹15,000 a month register to deduct and deposit PT. Each state issues its own, through its Commercial Taxes Department: Telangana's on the TGCT portal, Andhra Pradesh's on the APCT portal.
Enrolment (EC): companies, firms, professionals, traders and others pay their own annual PT under enrolment. The amount depends on the category in the Act's schedule, up to ₹2,500.
A company headquartered in Hyderabad with a branch in Vijayawada registers in both states and deducts PT for each employee under the rules of the state where they work.

Log in to the state's Commercial Taxes portal with your PT registration or enrolment number.
Choose e-payment under the Professional Tax Act and enter the period and amount (employers enter the number of employees in each slab).
Pay by net banking or the other modes shown, and download the receipt.
File the return the portal requires for the period, so payments and returns match.
Late payment attracts interest and penalty under each state's Act, so keep the 10th in the same reminder as your TDS (7th) and PF/ESIC (15th) dates.
A worked example and common mistakes
A Hyderabad startup has ten employees: one earns ₹14,000, three earn ₹18,000 and six earn ₹45,000 a month.
₹14,000: nil
3 × ₹150 = ₹450
6 × ₹200 = ₹1,200
Monthly deposit: ₹1,650, due by the 10th of the next month, or ₹19,800 over the year. The company also pays its own enrolment tax by 30 June.
The mistakes that most often lead to notices:
Not starting deductions when an employee's salary crosses ₹15,000 or ₹20,000 after an increment
Deducting Telangana PT for staff who actually work in Andhra Pradesh (or another state)
Paying under one state's registration for employees of the other
Forgetting the entity's own enrolment tax, because payroll only handles staff PT
Treating PT as a once-a-year payment instead of a monthly one
Who is exempt
Employees earning up to ₹15,000 a month
Members of the armed forces
Persons with specified disabilities, parents of children with certain disabilities, and senior citizens above the age set in the Act
Other categories listed in each state's exemption notification. The lists are similar but not identical, so check the one for your state.
Employees can deduct PT paid from salary income only under the old tax regime. The salary calculator shows the difference between the two regimes.
Setting up PT for a new business
When you hire your first employee earning above ₹15,000 a month, take the employer registration before the first payroll. When the business starts, take enrolment for the entity itself. Keep monthly payroll registers showing each employee's salary and PT deducted. Inspectors ask for these, and they make annual reconciliation simple.
Nil for monthly salary up to ₹15,000, ₹150 a month for ₹15,001 to ₹20,000, and ₹200 a month above ₹20,000, which comes to ₹2,400 a year at the top slab.
