West Bengal Caste Certificate 2026: Apply Online at castcertificatewb.gov.in, Documents and Status

Caste certificates for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) are issued by the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of the sub-division where you live. In Kolkata, it's the officer designated for the city. The official portal is castcertificatewb.gov.in, run by the Backward Classes Welfare Department.

West Bengal's OBC list is split into OBC-A and OBC-B. It has been the subject of court proceedings since 2024, so check the current list on the department's website before you apply for an OBC certificate.

1. Go to castcertificatewb.gov.in and open the application form.
2. Choose the category (SC, ST or OBC) and enter your details: name, parents' names, address, and your EPIC (voter ID), Aadhaar or Khadya Sathi number.
3. Submit to get an acknowledgement with an application number. Note it down.
4. Download and print the filled application, sign it, and submit it with your supporting documents at the SDO office (or designated centre) within 60 days. If you don't, the online application lapses.
5. A field enquiry may follow. Once approved, the certificate is issued and can be downloaded or collected.

Applications are also accepted at Duare Sarkar camps when they are held in your area.

• Recent passport-size photograph
• Identity proof: Aadhaar, voter ID or similar
• Proof of residence in West Bengal
• Proof of age or date of birth
• Proof of caste: a caste certificate of your father or a blood relative on the father's side is the strongest proof. Otherwise, documents such as land records, school records or a declaration supported by local enquiry.
• For OBC: income details for the creamy-layer check (the self-declaration or income certificate the form asks for)

The service time limit for issuing a caste certificate is four weeks from submission of a complete application. To check status, open castcertificatewb.gov.in, use the application status or certificate check option, and enter your application number. The same site lets anyone verify a certificate by its number, which is useful for employers and colleges.

If the certificate is refused, the order gives the reason. You can apply again with stronger proof of caste, or appeal to the authority named in the order.

The certificate is used for reserved seats in education, government jobs, scholarships and welfare schemes. Keep several attested copies, and check the exact format each institution asks for. Central government jobs, for example, require the OBC certificate in the central format.
