Passport Renewal in India 2026: New Fees, Documents & Re-Issue Process

In Passport Seva terminology, what people usually call “passport renewal” is normally a re-issue of passport.

4. Normal vs Tatkaal

Tatkaal is an expedited processing category, but it is not available for every case.

Eligibility can depend on:

• reason for re-issue;
• documentary completeness;
• whether the passport is lost or damaged beyond recognition;
• police verification/other restrictions.

Do not promise a fixed delivery date. Passport Seva’s service timelines are subject to documentation, verification and case type.

5. Important 2026 Fee Change

Many older pages still show:

• ₹1,500 for adult 36-page passport;
• ₹2,000 for adult 60-page passport;
• ₹1,000 for minor 36-page passport.

Those figures became outdated when the revised fees took effect on 1 July 2026.

Current headline normal fees are:

• adult 36 pages: ₹2,500
• adult 60 pages: ₹3,500
• minor 36 pages: ₹1,750
• PCC/miscellaneous passport-based certificate: ₹750

Consider applying before planned international travel where:

• destination/visa rules require sufficient remaining validity;
• the passport is close to expiry;
• pages are exhausted;
• personal particulars need correction;
• damage can affect machine reading.

The common “six-month validity” travel rule is not universal. Each destination and airline/visa regime can have its own requirement.

Check the destination’s official immigration/visa rules instead of assuming every country uses six months.

Lost/damaged cases require additional documentation and can have different fees.

If lost:

• report the loss as required;
• prepare the relevant declaration/police documentation;
• apply under the correct re-issue reason.
