PAN Card Correction Online: Change Name, Date of Birth or Photo (2026 Process)

Quick Summary

The short version

You can correct your name, date of birth, father's name, photo or signature on a PAN card online through Protean or UTIITSL. Since 1 April 2026 the request is made on Form PAN CR-01 for individuals. This guide covers the paperless Aadhaar route, the documents…

What you can correct

  • Name, including a change after marriage
  • Date of birth
  • Father's name
  • Photograph and signature
  • Address, gender, and contact details

Your PAN number itself never changes. A correction updates the details and issues a fresh card with the same number.

Which form? (changed in April 2026)

Under the Income-tax Rules, 2026, which apply from 1 April 2026:

  • Form PAN CR-01: changes or corrections for individuals
  • Form PAN CR-02: changes or corrections for companies, firms, trusts and other entities

Before that, the same request was made on the "Request for New PAN Card or/and Changes or Correction in PAN Data" form (often called the CSF form). When you apply online, the website shows the right form automatically. You don't need to download a PDF.

Step-by-step: correcting PAN online

  1. Fix Aadhaar first if it has the same mistake. The PAN correction is checked against Aadhaar, and a mismatch is the top reason for rejection.
  2. Go to the Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL PAN website and choose Changes or Correction in existing PAN data / Reprint of PAN card.
  3. Choose how you'll submit:
    • e-KYC and e-Sign (paperless): details are fetched from Aadhaar with an OTP, and you sign with a second OTP. This is the fastest route.
    • Scanned documents: upload proofs and sign digitally.
    • Physical: print the form, sign it and post it with the documents within the time allowed.
  4. Tick only the fields you are changing, enter the new details, and upload proof for each.
  5. Pay the fee and note the acknowledgement number.

Documents for each type of correction

ChangeProof accepted (any one, typically)
Name after marriageMarriage certificate, marriage invitation card, or the spouse's name on a passport
Name change (other)Gazette notification, or a certificate from a gazetted officer
Spelling correctionAadhaar, passport or other ID showing the correct spelling
Date of birthBirth certificate, matriculation certificate, passport or Aadhaar
Father's nameA document showing the correct father's name, such as a passport or matriculation certificate
AddressAadhaar, utility bill, bank statement or passport

With the paperless e-KYC route, Aadhaar itself serves as proof for identity, address and date of birth.

Fees and how long it takes

OptionApproximate fee (incl. GST)
Corrected PAN with a physical card, delivered in IndiaAbout ₹107
Corrected e-PAN only (PDF by email)About ₹72
Physical card delivered abroadHigher; shown at payment

The fee is the same however many fields you correct in one request. A corrected e-PAN usually arrives within a few days with the paperless route. The card follows by post.

Why PAN correction requests get rejected

  • Aadhaar still shows the old details. Update Aadhaar first. The PAN correction is matched against it.
  • The proof doesn't support the change. For example, a marriage certificate that shows a different spelling from the new name you entered.
  • Too many fields ticked. Ticking a field you aren't changing can create mismatches. Tick only what changes.
  • A mismatched signature or photo on physical applications.
  • Documents not sent for physical applications within the time allowed after the acknowledgement.

If a request is rejected, fix the cause and submit a fresh request. The fee isn't carried over.

Track and finish up

Track the request with the acknowledgement number on the same website. See our PAN card status guide for Protean, or the UTIITSL PAN status guide.

Once the correction is done, check that your PAN details match your bank, demat and employer records, and that PAN-Aadhaar linking still shows as linked. Use our link checker. A name or date-of-birth mismatch is also a common reason tax refunds fail, so it's worth fixing before you file your next income tax return.
