> Official Regulatory Notice: Aadhaar demographic and address updates are administered by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) under the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016. Address updates can be completed 100% online through the myAadhaar portal using self-attested Proof of Address (PoA) or via the Head of Family (HoF) digital consent workflow.
Your Aadhaar card serves as India’s universal digital identity proof. Whether opening a commercial current account, securing an MSME loan, updating income tax records, or claiming government welfare subsidies, keeping your residential address updated is mandatory. Relocating to a new city, moving to a rented home, or changing permanent residence requires an official change of address in Aadhaar card.
Under the latest official UIDAI schedule, the standard statutory charge for demographic updates (including address, name, gender, or mobile number) is ₹75 per request. The UIDAI offers two primary modes for address correction: Direct Online Upload (via valid PoA) and Head of Family (HoF) Based Update (for family members without independent address proofs), alongside physical Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK) facilities.

If you are a student, spouse, or family member residing at a new address without an electricity bill or registered rent agreement in your name, use the Head of Family (HoF) workflow:
1. Applicant Initiates Request: Log in to myAadhaar, select "Head of Family (HoF) based Address Update", and enter the HoF’s 12-digit Aadhaar number.
2. Upload Relationship Proof: Upload a document establishing your relationship with the HoF (e.g., Ration Card, Marriage Certificate, Passport, or Birth Certificate).
3. Pay ₹75 Fee: Pay the statutory processing fee to generate a Service Request Number (SRN).
4. HoF Digital Approval: Within 30 days, the HoF logs into their myAadhaar portal under "My HoF Requests", reviews your request, and approves it via Aadhaar OTP.
5. Address Updated: Once the HoF gives OTP consent, the address from the HoF's Aadhaar profile is replicated into your Aadhaar within 5 to 10 working days.
If your mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar or your online document upload fails, update your details physically at an authorized center:
- Step 1: Book an appointment online on the UIDAI portal or walk in to the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK) or designated bank/post office branch.
- Step 2: Fill out the Aadhaar Enrolment/Correction Form.
- Step 3: Present original Proof of Address documents for physical scanning by the verifier (originals are returned immediately).
- Step 4: Provide biometric authentication and pay the statutory fee of ₹75 (or ₹125 if updating biometrics simultaneously).
- Step 5: Collect the stamped Enrolment Slip containing the 28-digit Enrolment ID (EID) to track your application online.
> [!WARNING]
> Avoid These Common Aadhaar Address Update Mistakes:
> - Uploading Outdated Utility Bills: Submitting electricity or gas bills older than 3 months results in immediate cancellation. Fix: Download the latest cycle's utility PDF from your provider portal.
> - Cropped or Blurry Document Photos: Uploading low-resolution mobile photos with cutoff margins or obscured stamps will fail algorithmic checks. Fix: Use a flatbed scanner or document scanner app to produce a crisp, full-page PDF under 2MB.
> - Spelling & Landmark Mismatches: Entering a landmark or street name in the online form that is missing on your PoA document triggers manual review flags. Fix: Type the exact address string printed on your document.
> - Unlinked Mobile Number: Attempting online updates without an active linked mobile number prevents OTP login. Fix: Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra first to link your current mobile number.
Ensure you have the following ready before starting your online request:
- [ ] Active mobile number linked with Aadhaar for receiving OTP.
- [ ] Color PDF/JPEG scan of valid Proof of Address (under 2MB, crisp and uncropped).
- [ ] Utility bill (if using electricity/water/gas) dated within the last 90 days.
- [ ] Registered Rent Agreement (if rented) showing tenant and landlord details.
- [ ] HoF Aadhaar number + Valid Relationship Document (if using Head of Family mode).
- [ ] UPI, NetBanking, or Debit Card ready for the ₹75 statutory fee.
- [ ] UIDAI Standard Certificate (if applying via Gazetted Officer certification).
