Online Copyright Registration (Form XIV)

Copyright Registration

Copyright is an exclusive legal right granted to creators of original creative, literary, dramatic, musical, artistic works, cinematograph films, sound recordings, and computer software programs under the Copyright Act, 1957. Registering your copyright with the Copyright Office (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) establishes prima facie legal proof of ownership in court, enables statutory damages claims, and protects your intellectual property from unauthorized copying, distribution, or commercial piracy.

TaxQue provides specialized copyright advisory. Our intellectual property attorneys classify your creative work, prepare Statement of Particulars (SoP) and Statement of Further Particulars (SoFP) in Form XIV, manage NOCs from authors/publishers, file on the Copyright e-Filing portal, manage the mandatory 30-day statutory waiting period, and secure the official Registration Certificate (Extract from Register of Copyrights - ROC).

What is Copyright Registration?

Copyright Registration is the official government recognition of an author's or creator's original intellectual creation, granting exclusive reproduction, licensing, and adaptation monopolies.

Lifetime + 60 Years Statutory Protection: Under Section 22, copyright protection for literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works lasts for the lifetime of the author plus 60 years after their death.

Section 45 Mandatory 30-Day Objection Period

Under Rule 70(9) of the Copyright Rules, upon filing Form XIV, a mandatory statutory waiting period of 30 days is observed to allow any third party to file objections before the Registrar examines the application on merit.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Copyright Registration

Copyright Registration under the Copyright Act, 1957, grants creators exclusive legal ownership over original literary works (books, software source code, website content), artistic works (logos, illustrations, UI designs, architecture), musical works, sound recordings, and cinematograph films. It prevents unauthorized copying, reproduction, or commercial distribution.

Under Indian copyright law, copyright protection for literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works lasts for the AUTHOR'S ENTIRE LIFETIME PLUS 60 YEARS after the author's death. For cinematograph films, sound recordings, and corporate works, protection lasts for 60 years from the date of publication.

Under Section 2(o) of the Copyright Act, computer software source code and object code are protected as 'Literary Works'. We submit the complete source code (or first and last 10 pages for proprietary algorithms), functional user documentation, and software architecture descriptions to secure legal copyright ownership.

Under Rule 70 of Copyright Rules, 2013, once Form XIV is submitted, the Copyright Office observes a mandatory 30-day waiting period to allow third parties to file objections. If zero objections are received, the application moves to official examination.

Your application is handled by an experienced Copyright Attorney and IP Legal Associate. We categorize the work, draft Statement of Particulars (SoP), Statement of Further Particulars (SoFP), and ensure no-objection clearances.
