GST registration assistance: quick answer
TaxQue can help you assess GST registration eligibility, prepare the prescribed documents, complete FORM GST REG-01 and respond to legitimate departmental clarifications. The application is submitted through the official GST Portal Official ↗; government verification and approval remain outside any service provider's control.
GST registration is not mandatory for every new business. Before applying, establish your aggregate turnover, nature of supplies, state of operation and any compulsory-registration exception. Voluntary registration can be useful for some businesses but creates ongoing obligations.
| Question | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| Who can apply? | Proprietors, partnerships, LLPs, companies and other eligible persons |
| Basic application form | FORM GST REG-01 on the GST Portal |
| Common goods-only exemption | Up to ₹40 lakh in most states/UTs, subject to conditions |
| General services/mixed-supply threshold | ₹20 lakh, or ₹10 lakh in four specified states |
| Normal next step | Document check, portal application, authentication, tracking and any clarifications |
| Does TaxQue approve a GSTIN? | No. The tax authority or eligible electronic processing route determines approval |
When is GST registration required in India?
Under sections 22–25 of the CGST Act, 2017, liability depends on aggregate turnover and the type of supply. The threshold is computed across India for persons sharing the same PAN; it is not calculated separately for each shop.
Turnover thresholds in 2026
For exclusive suppliers of eligible goods, Notification 10/2019-Central Tax provides a ₹40 lakh exemption in most states. Some states and Union territories apply a lower threshold; specified products and persons covered by compulsory-registration rules may not qualify.
For services or mixed goods-and-services supplies, the general limit is ₹20 lakh, reduced to ₹10 lakh in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Goods-only suppliers in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Puducherry, Sikkim, Telangana and Uttarakhand generally use ₹20 lakh, while the four ₹10 lakh states require separate treatment. These are registration thresholds, not tax-free allowances after registration.
Selling goods, services or both is not the only test. Inter-state taxable goods supplies, certain reverse-charge liabilities and other section 24 categories can create compulsory registration even below the ordinary turnover threshold, subject to specific exemptions.
Is registration compulsory for online sellers?
Not always. Notification 34/2023-Central Tax provides a conditional exemption for eligible small sellers of goods through an e-commerce operator where supplies are intra-state, turnover stays below the applicable threshold, and specified PAN, state and enrolment requirements are met. Inter-state sales of goods are a different case. Do not assume that every Amazon or Flipkart seller automatically needs a GSTIN, or that an enrolment number is a GSTIN.
What does voluntary registration mean?
A person below the compulsory threshold may apply voluntarily under section 25(3). Registration may facilitate compliant B2B invoicing and eligible input tax credit, but a registered person must generally follow the applicable tax payment, record-keeping and return obligations. Compare those costs before choosing voluntary registration simply for perceived credibility.
How TaxQue can assist with GST registration
TaxQue's role should be understood as application and compliance assistance, not regulatory approval or a guarantee of eligibility. The exact paid deliverables, pricing and any additional return-filing support depend on the selected TaxQue GST Registration service.
1. Eligibility and registration-route review
A professional review can identify the business constitution, PAN-wise turnover, state or UT, taxability of supplies and whether a mandatory, voluntary, normal, composition or other specialised route needs evaluation. A wrong registration category may delay processing or create future compliance problems.
2. Document preparation and checks
Assistance may include reviewing legibility, legal names, premises proofs and authorised-signatory details against FORM GST REG-01 and CBIC Instruction 03/2025-GST. Supporting documents must be genuine and correspond to the actual place of business.
3. Application and authentication support
The taxpayer supplies accurate information and completes the legally required authentication and declaration. Depending on the business and portal route, this can involve OTP-based Aadhaar authentication, biometric verification or a visit to a designated GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK). A consultant cannot complete another person's personal biometric authentication.
4. ARN tracking and clarification assistance
After the portal generates an Application Reference Number (ARN), the application can be tracked online. If the officer issues FORM GST REG-03, a proper, evidence-based reply can be submitted in FORM GST REG-04 within the applicable deadline. Approval leads to a GSTIN and registration certificate in FORM GST REG-06; rejection is communicated through the prescribed order.
5. Post-registration handover
After approval, check the legal name, trade name, business address, effective date and registration type. Separate assistance for bank details, invoices, return filing and ITC reconciliation should be agreed under the relevant service scope; it is not automatically included in every registration package.
GST registration documents: practical checklist
Documents depend on the constitution of business and whether premises are owned, rented or used with consent. CBIC Instruction 03/2025-GST, dated 17 April 2025, directs officers to adhere to prescribed documents and avoid speculative requests.
| Situation | Typical documents to prepare |
|---|---|
| Identity and entity | PAN; authorised person details and photograph; applicable constitution documents |
| Proprietorship | Proprietor's PAN and identity/authentication particulars |
| Partnership | Partnership deed; partner/authorised signatory information |
| LLP or company | Incorporation or constitution records and authorised signatory details as applicable |
| Owned business premises | One acceptable ownership proof, such as property tax receipt, municipal record or electricity bill |
| Rented premises | Rent/lease agreement with appropriate proof of lessor's ownership; additional lessor identity proof for an unregistered agreement where applicable |
| Family-owned or consent premises | Owner's consent letter, owner identity proof and one acceptable ownership document |
| Rented premises without agreement | Prescribed affidavit and possession evidence, in the circumstances covered by the CBIC instruction |
Bank details: The GST Portal makes bank-account entry optional during initial REG-01 application. A registered taxpayer must subsequently comply with Rule 10A and the applicable portal deadline. Do not delay an otherwise complete initial application merely because the initial bank-account field is absent.
A genuine home-based business may use residential premises as its principal place of business if it can establish its lawful use and provide the appropriate ownership, rent or consent documents. A commercial lease is not a universal GST-registration requirement.

How long does GST registration take in 2026?
The precise route matters. Rules 9A and 14A took effect on 1 November 2025 under Notification 18/2025-Central Tax.
| Processing route | What the rule provides | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|
Rule 9A | Electronic grant within three working days for applications selected under prescribed data-analysis and risk parameters | Not available simply because the applicant asks for it |
Rule 14A | Optional simplified electronic registration for eligible applicants, generally within three working days after successful Aadhaar authentication | Monthly output tax liability on supplies to registered persons must not exceed ₹2.5 lakh, with other conditions |
Ordinary Rule 9 processing | Statutory processing depends on authentication, completeness, notices and physical verification | A straightforward application may be processed faster than a flagged or deficient one |
The Rule 14A ₹2.5 lakh figure is monthly B2B output tax liability, not turnover or the regular GST-registration threshold. The new options do not eliminate legitimate checks or guarantee completion on a chosen date.
CBIC Instruction 03/2025-GST gives guidance for ordinary scrutiny, including seven-working-day processing of complete, non-risky applications and the longer physical-verification path where prescribed. A REG-03 notice can change the timeline. If clarification is issued, the instruction provides seven working days for the REG-04 response and explains the officer's subsequent decision process.
What if the GST officer requests unnecessary documents?
Instruction 03/2025-GST discourages speculative clarification demands and additional documents beyond what is relevant under REG-01. It gives detailed examples for ownership, rent and consent-based premises. This does not prevent legitimate scrutiny of inconsistent or illegible documents.
If a request appears improper, first read the precise notice and respond with the relevant prescribed evidence. Instruction 04/2025-GST, dated 2 May 2025, provides a grievance mechanism through jurisdictional CGST channels for complaints about non-compliant document requests or rejection grounds. The escalation should identify the ARN, relevant jurisdiction and issue; state-jurisdiction matters may be forwarded to the concerned authority.
What does GST registration cost?
For an ordinary online application, separate GST Portal filing requirements from any professional assistance charges. TaxQue service pricing is commercial and depends on the package selected; it is not a government registration fee.
Check the latest service-page price, included deliverables and whether departmental-query support or subsequent return filing is covered before payment. Some specialised GST categories may have distinct requirements, such as a casual taxable person's advance tax deposit, so do not assume that every applicant has exactly the same cash-flow requirements.
Common mistakes that cause delays
- Wrong turnover test: Counting only sales from one shop instead of all outward supplies under the PAN.
- Wrong legal name: Using a trade name where the portal requires the legal name as per PAN.
- Incomplete premises proof: Uploading a rent agreement without the applicable ownership evidence or consent documents.
- Assuming bank details must be provided at REG-01: This confuses initial application fields with later Rule 10A obligations.
- Assuming 'fast-track' means guaranteed approval: Risk-based checks, biometric verification and departmental decisions remain statutory processes.
- Ignoring REG-03: Missing the reply period can result in a reasoned rejection through REG-05.
- Overlooking the e-commerce exemption: A qualifying small intra-state seller may use prescribed enrolment instead of registration.
- Forgetting compliance after receiving GSTIN: Registration can introduce invoicing, account updates and return obligations.
Choosing between self-registration and professional help
| Consideration | Self-registration on GST Portal | TaxQue application assistance |
|---|---|---|
Who provides information and identity verification? | Applicant | Applicant, with procedural guidance |
Eligibility and document review | Applicant checks independently | Service-scope-dependent assistance |
Government approval | By competent authority or eligible portal process | Same government process |
Professional assistance charge | None if done independently | As specified in the selected plan |
Return filing after registration | Applicant handles or appoints another provider | Only if included or purchased separately |
For a straightforward case, the official portal may be sufficient. For mixed supplies, multiple premises, uncertain compulsory-registration conditions or complex documents, professional assistance may reduce avoidable errors—but cannot lawfully guarantee an outcome.
Conclusion
A successful GST application begins with the correct registration decision, not with uploading documents. Confirm liability, prepare appropriate premises evidence, follow REG-01, complete personal authentication and monitor any official notices. If you want help with the administrative and compliance work, review the TaxQue GST Registration service and confirm the exact plan scope before engaging.
