Documents Required for Passport in 2026: New Passport, Renewal and Minors (with New Fees)

• Higher fees from 1 July 2026. A normal adult passport now costs ₹2,500 for 36 pages and ₹3,500 for 60 pages, up from ₹1,500 and ₹2,000. The fee for a minor's 36-page passport is reported at ₹1,750. Tatkaal costs more. Use the fee calculator on passportindia.gov.in for your exact case before paying.
• New validity for children from 17 September 2026. A 36-page passport issued to a child under 15 is valid for five years or until the child turns 18, whichever comes first.

1. Proof of present address (any one):

• Aadhaar card or e-Aadhaar
• Electricity, water, telephone or gas bill
• Bank account passbook or statement with photo
• Registered rent agreement
• Income tax assessment order
• Spouse's passport, if your address is the same, along with a copy of the passport's first and last pages

2. Proof of date of birth (any one):

• Birth certificate
• PAN card
• Aadhaar card or e-Aadhaar
• Driving licence
• School leaving or matriculation certificate
• Election photo ID card

For anyone born on or after 1 October 2023, only the birth certificate is accepted as proof of date of birth.

3. Supporting documents, if they apply: proof of a name change (gazette notification or marriage certificate), proof of non-ECR status (such as a Class 10 or higher certificate), and an annexure if you're a government employee.

When applying for a new passport, carry originals and self-attested copies to the appointment. Police verification follows for most fresh passports.

• Your old passport in original.
• Self-attested copies of its first two and last two pages, including the ECR/non-ECR page and any observation page.
• Proof of present address, if it differs from the address in the old passport.
• Proof of any change in name or appearance, if applicable.

Apply for renewal within a year before or after expiry to keep the process simple. An expired passport can still be re-issued, though police verification may be needed.

• Proof of date of birth: the birth certificate. It is the only proof accepted for children born on or after 1 October 2023.
• Proof of present address, which can be in the parents' name.
• Passports of both parents (copies of the first and last pages), if they have them.
• Annexure D: a declaration signed by both parents. If one parent cannot sign, for example because of divorce or separation, a different annexure applies. The Passport Seva portal tells you which during the application.
• For renewal: the child's old passport in original, plus copies of its first and last pages.

At least one parent must come to the appointment with the child, carrying both parents' original documents. Minors under 15 get a passport valid for five years or until 18, so plan the renewal before school trips and exams.

1. Register on passportindia.gov.in or the mPassport Seva app.
2. Fill in the application for a fresh passport or re-issue, and choose normal or Tatkaal.
3. Pay the fee online and book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra.
4. Attend with the originals and copies of every document listed in your application.
5. Track the application status online. The passport is sent by speed post after verification.
